Technical Problems and Solutions

Options screen with Deregister button

An error occurs when I click the START button in NumberWorks@home. What do I do?

The introduction animation is failing. Either reinstall Flash (available on the cd-rom), or go into options and select "do not show introduction".

I get a "class not accepted" error when I press START. I am using Windows 98.

The original Windows 98 does not run NumberWorks@home without installing the Microsoft Jet Database Engine below.

I get the error message "Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed" error when I press START. I am using Windows 98.

The MicroSoft Jet database engine has become corrupt. Re-install the Microsoft Jet Database Engine below.

I get a "cannot write to data/config.ini" error. I am using Windows XP.

NumberWorks@home requires administrator rights to run correctly. See the Windows XP section below for the solution. Also check that you have updated to v1.09 by downloading and installing the patch above.

The mouse is very sluggish and moves slowly.

Click the Options button on the NumberWorks@home launcher. In the top section "Change Screen Properties", set it to either "800x600 resolution" or "no resizing".

Windows 95 and Windows 98 Users

The NumberWorks@home CD will run on a Windows 95 or 98 (first edition) computer by updating the Microsoft Jet database engine. If you get an error message after the NumberWorks@home introduction animation, download and install the following patch:

  1. Microsoft Jet Database Engine (Windows 95 and 98 first edition only, issued 08/08/2005, size 3,872 Kb)

Windows XP Users

The NumberWorks@home CD requires administrator rights to run correctly. If the user account is not an administrator you may receive an error such as:

  • Cannot write to data/config.ini

To fix this problem you will need to logoff Windows XP, then re-login as an administrator account and change the user account to have administrator rights. Consult your Windows XP manual for help with this. (Note: This error will only occur if whoever setup your computer specifically went in and changed the user account to be a limited access account. Other software such as Microsoft Office 2003 will not function correctly without administrator rights).

Also check that you have updated to v1.09 by downloading and installing the patch above.
