The earliest known written numerals were used by the Egyptians and Babylonians about 5000 years ago. The Egyptians used 10 as their number base: The Babylonians used 60. The Romans used both five and ten as their number bases. None of these three systems had a symbol for zero. The Mayans of central America included a zero in their system.
